Blackleg

  • Common Name: N/A
  • Cause: Clostridium Chauvoci
  • Treatment: Penicillin and sulfa drugs
  • Type of Cattle Affected: Cattle from 4 months to 2 years
  • Vaccine: 7-way vaccine
  • Symptoms: Swelling of muscles, especially legs, muscular depression

Hemorrhagic Septicemia

  • Common Name: Shipping fever
  • Cause: stress, virus, infection, bacteria
  • Treatment: Sulfonamides, antibiotics, antiserums, Liquamycin 200, Tylan 200
  • Type of Cattle Affected: young calves
  • Vaccine: pasturella
  • Symptoms: prostration, dropping ears, watery eyes, rapid breathing, high temperature with chills

Brucellosis

  • Common Name: Bangs disease
  • Cause: bacteria (Brucella abortus)
  • Treatment: None
  • Type of Cattle Affected: N/A
  • Vaccine: Strain 19
  • Symptoms: infertility, retained placentas, abortion after 4 months

Keratoconjunctivitis

  • Common Name: pink eye
  • Cause: Moraxella bovis
  • Treatment: sulfonamides, antibiotics, nitrofurons
  • Type of Cattle Affected: most common in white faced cattle
  • Vaccine: vaccines containing pink eye bacteria
  • Symptoms: swollen eyelid, center of cornea appears white

Foot Rot

  • Common Name: Sore foot
  • Cause: bacteria, occurs when hooves do not dry out
  • Treatment: moving to dry areas, use of bluestone solution

  • Symptoms: Lameness, swelling of the foot, spreading of the toes

  • Treatment: Must be removed

  • Cause: excessive gas in rumen, high grain diet
  • Treatment: drench with mineral oil to start eructation, stomach tube or puncturing rumen (trocar)

  • Symptoms: Left side of abdomen will balloon up

  • Cause: improper calcium and phosphorous ratio, and genetics
  • Treatment: surgery

  • Symptoms: restlessness, unsuccessful attempts to urinate, urine dribbles slowly from sheath, loss of appetite
